The chief executive of Offshore Energies UK has called for an "urgent policy reset" from the incoming Prime Minister to increase domestic energy production. David Whitehouse, leading the trade body, warned in a letter to Labour MPs that the UK has experienced 50 years of industrial decline and faces growing dependence on imported energy.

Whitehouse highlighted that North Sea oil and gas has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to imported liquefied natural gas. He also pointed out that domestic oil and gas production supports thousands of jobs. The remarks come as Andy Burnham is set to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister next month, and amid concerns that the UK remains reliant on fuel refined from Russian oil.
