North Carolina Senate Candidate Arrested After Armed Standoff Near School

Cary, North Carolina – Libertarian state Senate candidate Jonathan Miller was arrested Monday after an hours-long armed standoff with police near a private school, concluding a situation that began with alarming social media posts. The incident triggered a police manhunt and led to a lockdown at Resurrection Lutheran School.

Police were initially called to Miller's apartment for a welfare check on Monday morning after he posted messages Sunday night suggesting suicidal intent. Officers encountered Miller, who was carrying a holstered revolver. According to police, Miller fled when ordered not to touch the weapon, leading officers to pursue him into the woods near the school.

During the standoff, Miller posted on X (formerly Twitter), detailing his actions and thoughts. In one post around 9:38 a.m., he wrote, "The whole police department is chasing me with guns drawn. This should be fun. I've got six shots and the high ground. I hope they don't find me, but if they do it's going to be a hell of a show." He later responded to messages, stating he had given away all his money to charity and claimed to have "reached the tree line" while trying to evade authorities.

Miller, who is challenging a Democratic incumbent for a North Carolina state Senate seat, later spoke with local affiliate WRAL, explaining his actions. He stated he had been depressed and suicidal the previous night, leading to his viral social media post. He recounted waking up, having coffee, and then encountering an officer while he was outside. Miller claimed the officer saw his weapon and ordered him not to reach for it, which he refused before backing away and running into the woods.

Law enforcement officers established a perimeter and urged the public to avoid the area due to fears for public safety. The Resurrection Lutheran School, a K-8 institution, initiated a code yellow lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Around 1:46 p.m., Miller posted that a hostage negotiator had contacted him and that he spotted officers moving in, prompting him to flee again. Shortly after 3:00 p.m., police apprehended Miller without further incident.

Cary Police Chief Terry Sult confirmed that Miller was wanted on a warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He faces charges including communicating threats, resisting a public officer, going armed to the terror of the people, and possession of a firearm by a felon. No shots were fired during the confrontation.

The Libertarian Party of North Carolina issued a statement acknowledging the situation and thanking law enforcement for resolving it without violence. Miller's campaign platform reportedly includes standard Libertarian tenets such as weakening police legal protections, repealing drug laws, and reducing economic regulations.
