A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was fatally shot while delivering mail Tuesday in North Carolina, leaving her two children orphaned just months after their father died in a car accident. Brandi Reynolds, a mother of two and a postal worker, was killed on Friday afternoon in Hayes, North Carolina.

Authorities have arrested William Craig Durham and charged him with kidnapping and murder. Investigators with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation found Reynolds deceased at the scene. According to an arrest report, authorities allege Durham restrained Reynolds and moved her from one location to another without her consent.

Reynolds was employed as a rural mail carrier for the USPS. Her husband, Brent Reynolds, died in a car accident in December. Reynolds had expressed her love for her children on social media, writing in a February Facebook post, "The reason I get up every morning. Love these babies. They are what makes life worth living."

Officials have not disclosed any relationship between Reynolds and Durham.
