A North Carolina doctor, Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, was arrested on August 22 and faces multiple felony charges following an alleged interstate road rage incident that left two sisters injured. The shooting occurred around 8:50 a.m. on Interstate 77, approximately three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line.
Virginia State Police reported that Arriviello, driving a Mercedes-Benz, fired into a Jeep, striking the two sisters, aged 12 and 20, in the legs. Both victims were airlifted to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Arriviello then fled the scene in his vehicle.
Troopers located and stopped Arriviello's Mercedes-Benz about 15 miles away, leading to his arrest. He has been charged with malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm with intent to maim, and using a firearm while committing a felony. Arriviello is being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on September 29.
The Virginia State Police have not disclosed what initiated the alleged road rage encounter or if a firearm was recovered. The driver of the Jeep was cited for reckless driving, though their identity has not been released.
North Carolina Medical Board records indicate Arriviello has been licensed as an emergency medicine physician since 2010. He is listed as the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe, North Carolina, and his record shows no public disciplinary actions. Representatives from Family Urgent Care and the Virginia State Police did not immediately provide further comment.
