A climber sustained serious injuries after falling approximately 20 feet on Shortoff Mountain in North Carolina's Linville Gorge over the weekend. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday when the lead climber fell while attempting to place gear about 40 feet above a ledge, according to Burke Rescue Inc. and SAR.

Rescue Operation

Paramedics were the first to respond, rappelling down to the climber to provide initial assessment and care. Additional resources were requested, including a need for whole blood. A Burke Rescue volunteer carried the blood approximately 1.5 miles, overcoming a 1,000-foot elevation change in 31 minutes, to stabilize the patient for transport.

Due to the steep and rugged terrain, a North Carolina Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team Black Hawk helicopter, designated "Kill Devil 244," was dispatched to assist with an air rescue. The helicopter successfully lifted the injured climber, identified as Jacob Gregory in an online fundraiser shared by Burke Rescue, from the mountainside to Charlotte for medical treatment. The operation involved coordination among two dozen agencies from surrounding counties.

Safety Considerations

Burke Rescue noted the inherent risks associated with climbing and advised individuals to be aware of their abilities and use appropriate equipment. The organization thanked the numerous responders involved in the rescue, emphasizing their crucial role in saving Gregory's life and ensuring his safe return to his family and friends.
