Lando Norris claimed victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix, aided by a series of incidents involving his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and a penalty for rival Lewis Hamilton. The win marks Norris's first since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in November.
Key Incidents Shape the Race
The race took a significant turn on lap 38 when Piastri, who had pitted, encountered Williams driver Carlos Sainz while attempting to rejoin the race. Sainz, distracted by a battle with Fernando Alonso, failed to yield to Piastri under blue flags, leading to contact between the two cars. This incident delayed Piastri, allowing Norris, who pitted on the following lap, to emerge ahead.
Piastri expressed his frustration over team radio, citing Sainz as the cause of the delay and questioning the team's strategy. His race ended on lap 56 due to a gearbox problem, promoting Lewis Hamilton to second place.
Virtual Safety Car and Penalties Impact Hamilton and Russell
A virtual safety car period followed Piastri's retirement. Both Norris and Hamilton pitted for new tires. While Norris maintained the lead, Hamilton emerged from the pits close to Kimi Antonelli. Hamilton briefly overtook Antonelli before the first corner, but this maneuver was deemed illegal under VSC conditions. He was subsequently investigated and received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
This penalty dropped Hamilton to fifth place behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, costing him valuable championship points. He now trails Antonelli by 50 points heading into the summer break. George Russell finished seventh, falling to 59 points behind Antonelli. Russell's race began poorly when his Mercedes' anti-stall system engaged, dropping him to 19th by the end of the first lap, but he recovered through the field.
On-Track Action and Championship Standings
Max Verstappen secured second place, benefiting from not needing to pit under the VSC due to having newer tires than Hamilton. Antonelli finished third, gaining an advantage over his championship rivals Hamilton and Russell. A notable on-track moment was Verstappen's pass on Hamilton at the first corner.
Piastri's earlier incident was not the only challenge he faced. He also struggled with his first-lap performance, a recurring issue that has previously impacted his race results. Despite starting from pole and leading into the first corner, he drifted wide, allowing Norris to take the lead. Norris then pulled away, finishing the race 15 seconds ahead of Verstappen.
