McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has faced a dip in performance this season compared to his strong debut year, prompting questions about his development and future alongside teammate Lando Norris. Norris, who has secured two recent Grand Prix victories and contended for a third, currently holds a significant 55-point lead over Piastri in the championship.
While qualifying statistics show Norris with a 12-4 advantage over Piastri, the actual pace difference over one lap is minimal, averaging only 0.071 seconds. However, Norris has been the more consistent and convincing performer in races. This divergence in performance has been attributed to several factors.
Technical and Driving Adaptations
According to BBC Sport F1 correspondent Andrew Benson and McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, Piastri's challenges may stem from technical aspects of the current Formula 1 cars. The cars have less downforce than in the previous season, and Piastri is reportedly less comfortable than Norris in low-grip conditions. Stella noted that Piastri's driving style, which is strong in high-speed corners, needs adaptation when the car's grip level is reduced. This requires a greater mental effort, leading to a slight loss in tenths of a second as drivers process rather than react by pure instinct.
Additionally, the engines' use of cornering to charge batteries has reduced the number of high-speed, grip-limited corners, potentially diminishing a natural advantage Piastri previously held. Stella emphasized that in a highly competitive field where the top three teams are closely matched, any suboptimal performance can lead to significant positional losses.
Contractual Context and Future Speculation
Despite the performance gap, both McLaren and Piastri reject any suggestions of tension between them. Piastri is currently under contract with McLaren until at least the end of 2027. However, it is understood that McLaren had considered signing Max Verstappen during the summer. Had that move materialized, it is highly probable that Piastri would have been the driver replaced. Although Verstappen's new contract with Red Bull has seemingly closed that door for now, performance clauses within his contract could reopen the possibility of McLaren pursuing him in the future if Red Bull's performance falters. For the present, Piastri's focus remains on regaining his competitive form.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris is set to compete at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, a circuit that may not favor the characteristics of the McLaren car due to its long straights. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will also be competing on home ground.
