A recent 20-day Alaskan cruise aboard the Ruby Princess was disrupted by a norovirus outbreak, leading to strict sanitary protocols and sickness among more than 100 passengers and 20 crew members. The ship, which departed from San Francisco on June 12, was described by one passenger, Peter Korer, as a "floating Petri dish."

Korer, a seasoned cruiser from Las Vegas, recounted that the outbreak began early in the voyage, shortly after the ship's first Alaskan destination, Ketchikan. The ship's captain announced the outbreak over the public address system on June 15, urging passengers with symptoms to report to the medical center and warning of extensive cleaning procedures.

In response to the outbreak, crew members implemented enhanced sanitation protocols. Passengers experiencing symptoms were required to quarantine in their rooms for at least 24 hours after their symptoms subsided. Buffet service was modified, with gloved workers serving food instead of self-service. Those in quarantine received meals outside their rooms.

Despite the disruptions, Korer, who did not fall ill, took precautions such as frequent hand washing, avoiding crowds, and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces. He noted that passengers were asked to leave their rooms for designated periods to allow for deep cleaning.

The Ruby Princess returned to San Francisco on July 2, after which it underwent a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection. Princess Cruises stated that a "limited" number of guests reported mild gastrointestinal illness, with the CDC reporting that 3.4% of passengers and 2% of crew members showed symptoms, primarily diarrhea and vomiting. This incident marks the third norovirus outbreak on the Princess Cruises line since March, following similar events on the Star Princess and Caribbean Princess.

Norovirus is a common cause of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on cruise ships, accounting for a significant majority of CDC-reported outbreaks in recent years. Korer indicated that the experience would not deter him from future Princess Cruises voyages, noting that he immediately boarded another cruise ship, a Carnival vessel, after disembarking the Ruby Princess.
