Norman Irwin, Northern Ireland's Oldest Man and WWII Veteran, Dies at 107

Norman Irwin, Northern Ireland's oldest man and a Second World War veteran, has died at the age of 107. His funeral was held at New Row Presbyterian Church in Coleraine, where he was remembered for his remarkable life and service.

Irwin served as an engineer with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in North Africa during the Second World War. His military service was honored at his funeral with his coffin draped in the REME flag and the participation of a standard-bearer, guard of honour, bugler, and piper.

Beyond his military contributions, Irwin was an active figure in his local community. He was instrumental in establishing the Coleraine Winemakers Club, was a founding member of the Coleraine Rotary Club, and helped create the Agivey Anglers Association. His community involvement was recognized last year when he received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King's Birthday Honours.

During the thanksgiving service, Rev Jonny McKane spoke of Irwin's longevity and independence, noting his dedication to his profession and his family. McKane recounted Irwin's transfer to the newly formed REME in 1942, where he rose to the rank of sergeant, and his subsequent posting to Hawke in 1945, where he met his future wife, Margaret. The couple married in 1946 and had four children: David, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Joy.

Irwin's grandson, Chris, described him as a "hero" to the wider world but affectionately as "Papa" to his family. He highlighted his grandfather's ability to build and fix anything, his enduring sense of humor, and his innovative spirit, predating the modern DIY culture.

Irwin lived his later years at the Cottage Care Home, where his birthdays were notable events. He passed away peacefully at the age of 107, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by his family and community.
