Nor'easter Unleashes Torrential Rain and High Winds Across East Coast

A powerful Nor'easter is poised to batter the East Coast through Sunday night, bringing with it up to 8 inches of rain and wind gusts reaching 80 mph, according to meteorologists. The storm is also expected to cause major coastal flooding across the affected regions.

Long Island and the Jersey Shore are anticipated to receive between 4 to 8 inches of total rainfall by Sunday night. These areas will also experience severe winds, with gusts predicted to range from 60 to 80 mph. New York City is expected to see between 2 to 4 inches of rain over the weekend.

"In addition to the rain, significant coastal hazards will persist along the East Coast as the strong northeast winds coincide with high astronomical tides into early next week," said Senior AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Doll. "Due to the prolonged nature of the northeasterly winds, water levels from coastal flooding may be the highest for some locations in several years. Severe beach erosion has already occurred in some areas and will continue to be a problem through the weekend."

The storm's impact is not limited to coastal areas. Doll warned that trees, still full of leaves and with saturated ground from recent heavy rain, are susceptible to falling. This could lead to downed power lines and widespread power outages that may extend into early next week for some communities.

Conditions are expected to begin easing on Monday, but the severe weather pattern is forecast to continue through Sunday night. New York Governor Kathy Hochul had previously alerted residents to the possibility of up to 5 inches of rain across the state during the weekend.
