Nor’easter Threatens NYC Area with Coastal Flooding and High Winds This Weekend
Forecasters predict strong gusts and heavy rain, with eastern Long Island and the Rockaways facing the brunt of the storm.
A significant nor’easter is expected to bring coastal flooding and strong winds to parts of the New York City area this weekend, according to meteorologists and city officials. Forecasters warn of potential power outages and urge residents in vulnerable areas to prepare.
The storm is projected to impact eastern Long Island and the Rockaways with high tides and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph beginning Friday afternoon. Most of New York City can anticipate heavy rain and wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynkowski stated that the storm is "significant" for September and could lead to power disruptions. Rainfall totals are estimated to be between 2 and 3 inches. Residents are advised to have flashlights ready and phones charged in anticipation of potential extended power outages.
The storm’s most intense effects are expected to subside by Saturday night, with Sunday forecast to bring reduced wind and rain.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers residing in flood-prone coastal zones to monitor weather updates closely. "While this storm is expected to pass offshore and keep the heaviest rain east of New York City, New Yorkers should still prepare for gusty winds, rain and coastal flooding this weekend," Mamdani said in a press release. He advised those near the coast to move vehicles to higher ground, secure outdoor items, and avoid streets prone to flooding.
Emergency management commissioner Christina Farrell echoed these warnings, urging residents to secure outdoor furniture and other belongings before the winds intensify late Friday. She also cautioned travelers to allow extra time for journeys and be aware of potential road ponding.
City officials also noted that a high risk of rip currents at city beaches is expected to persist through at least Saturday.
