Byron V. Garrett, the head of Genesys Works, is driving the nonprofit's mission to connect underserved high school students with internships that can lead to lucrative career paths. The organization, which has already helped thousands of students secure their first jobs, recently expanded its services to Nashville in February, with plans to reach at least 20 additional markets within the next five years.

Garrett, who previously served as executive vice president and chief revenue officer at United Way Worldwide, draws from his own experience with a transformative high school internship. He noted that the program not only shifted his perspective on career possibilities but also provided mentors who remain influential in his life. This firsthand understanding of opportunity's impact fuels his commitment to making similar experiences accessible to all young people.

Genesys Works aims to combat the challenge of securing corporate partnerships, as some companies underestimate the capabilities of 17- and 18-year-olds. Garrett emphasizes that students in the program consistently exceed expectations. He shared an example of a student who, after completing the program, secured a full-time position with a partner company at $70,000 per year just weeks after graduating high school.

As the nature of work evolves, influenced by factors like artificial intelligence and remote operations, Genesys Works is adapting its program model. While placements were once concentrated in traditional tech support, they are now increasing in sectors such as healthcare and construction. Companies like Cloudflare continue to partner with Genesys Works, demonstrating a belief that technology will reshape roles rather than eliminate them.

Garrett envisions a future where Genesys Works operates in over 20 markets, ensuring that more young individuals have access to opportunities that can alter the trajectory of their lives. The program's success is attributed to the dedication of its students and the commitment of its corporate partners.
