Preliminary findings from an independent autopsy of Nolan Wells, 18, are expected to be released on Wednesday morning, according to the family's lawyer.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, along with Wells' parents Christine and Elmore Wonsley, are scheduled to announce the discovered details at 9 a.m. EST. Wells, a college football player, went missing during a Fourth of July boating trip with friends to Horn Island, Mississippi.
His body was recovered from the water off the island two days later and was identified through dental records. The Mississippi state medical examiner performed an initial autopsy, but an official cause of death has not yet been released.
To further investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, Wells' body was transported to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Crump had previously stated that this second autopsy would determine if Wells sustained any physical injuries beyond drowning.
Wells was laid to rest on Monday in his hometown, two weeks after his body was found. His funeral was held at Center Pointer Church, where hundreds of mourners gathered to remember the athlete. His mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, urged attendees to keep her son's memory alive by sharing stories and continuing to speak his name.
