Nolan Wells' Parents Dispute Grand Jury Findings in Son's Drowning Death

The parents of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old whose body was found floating in the water after a July 4 boat trip, stated Tuesday that they do not believe their son “simply and accidentally drowned.” Their assertion comes despite a grand jury’s finding that his death was consistent with drowning and that there was no evidence of foul play.

Christine Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, Wells’ parents, voiced their skepticism during a press conference in Stonecrest, Georgia, accompanied by their attorney, Ben Crump. Christine Wonsley expressed that the newly released grand jury report offered no answers and reinforced their belief that Nolan's death was not thoroughly or transparently investigated.

The grand jury in Jackson County, Mississippi, reviewed autopsy results from both the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office and an independent pathologist hired by the family. The jurors concluded that the discovery, condition, and location of Wells’ body were consistent with drowning. They also found no evidence indicating that a crime led to his death.

Wells disappeared on July 4 during a boat excursion to Horn Island with friends. His body was discovered two days later. The grand jury’s decision was announced Friday after reviewing evidence in the case. The family, however, remains unconvinced by the official conclusion, questioning the thoroughness of the investigation into their son's death.
