Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. has reportedly misled the public regarding the resolution of his reckless driving case stemming from a May arrest in Georgia. According to reports, Smith's case is still active, and he faces a bench trial scheduled for August 25.
Authorities in Twiggs County, Georgia, stated that Smith is still facing charges from his May arrest, during which he was accused of driving a 2026 Lamborghini at 135 mph in a 70 mph zone. A representative for the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the case is "still open," and a court official indicated the upcoming trial date.
This information contradicts statements made by Smith himself on Monday. When asked by reporters if his speeding ticket in Georgia had been resolved, Smith replied, "nothing came of it." He added, "I apologized to the organization... and I’ll make that apology now. I represent the Eagles no matter where I go. Georgia, Florida, it doesn’t matter. That’s one of the ones that I own up and I apologize for. It’s just like that. We make mistakes and it can’t happen again and that’s unacceptable."
Smith also stated he had apologized to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and team owner Jeffrey Lurie, emphasizing that he could not let his teammates down. A spokesperson for the Eagles declined to comment on the situation, citing that it is "still a pending matter."
Law enforcement reported that Smith was pulled over by a Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant around 11 p.m. on May 15. The officer observed Smith traveling at "what appeared to be an extreme rate of speed." Smith was taken into custody at the scene and charged with speeding in excess of maximum limits and reckless driving.
