Nobel Prize Week Kicks Off in Stockholm with Medicine Award

Nobel Prize week commenced in Stockholm on Monday with the awarding of the prize in physiology or medicine at the Karolinska Institute.
Last year, three scientists were recognized for their discoveries concerning how the immune system differentiates between attacking pathogens and the body's own cells. Their work identified a crucial pathway, known as peripheral immune tolerance, which helps regulate the immune system. Experts have indicated that these findings are vital for understanding autoimmune conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.
The week's accolades continue with the physics prize on Tuesday, followed by the chemistry prize on Wednesday and the literature prize on Thursday. The peace prize is scheduled for Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.
Each prize this year carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million, regardless of whether the recipient is an individual, a small group, or an organization.
