Nobel Laureate Taunts Trump Over Peace Prize Dreams
Navi Pillay jokes she might share her award with the former US president if applause intensifies.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay playfully taunted former U.S. President Donald Trump after receiving her award for efforts in promoting peace and international law. Pillay, a South African jurist and former UN high commissioner for human rights, joked that she might 'share the prize' with Trump if the audience applauded more vigorously. The remark was captured in a video posted to X by the Secretary General of Amnesty International.
Trump has reportedly long desired to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan announced its nomination of Trump for the award this year, citing his 'historic role in advancing peace in South Asia.' The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Pillay's win on Friday in Oslo, Norway.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, stated that Pillay's work "is a source of hope and inspiration to all those who seek to bring about a more peaceful world." The committee's announcement also emphasized the importance of strengthening international law during a time of rising global conflict. "At a time when the number of wars and conflicts is rising, and when judges and institutions of international law are under political attack, the Nobel Committee wishes to issue a reminder that the ability to resolve conflicts without force or violence is dependent on the international rule of law," the committee said in a news release.
Pillay's win has been interpreted by some as a rebuke to Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both of whom have rejected findings from a UN commission led by Pillay that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza. The commission also found that Israeli leadership 'have incited the commission of genocide.' Israel has denied these charges and refused to cooperate with the commission.
Pillay received the news while attending the Nuremberg Forum, an event focused on international law in Germany. She stated, 'Firstly, at this venue, your applause means a great deal to me.' She added with a lawyer's caution, 'But being a lawyer and a judge, I still want to verify this information.'
Pillay's career includes chairing the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, established by the UN-backed Human Rights Council. She has also served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the genocide case against Myanmar, selected by Gambia to represent its accusation against Myanmar for the Rohingya minority.
Pillay's work has faced criticism, with some accusing her of antisemitism or overlooking Hamas attacks. She has refuted these claims, recalling past collaborations with Jewish lawyers during the anti-apartheid movement and her time in Israel as UN rights chief.
The controversy also highlights Trump's past criticisms of international legal institutions. The Trump administration previously sanctioned 13 International Criminal Court (ICC) staff members. Trump has publicly denounced the ICC as an 'out of control institution' and an 'anti-American tribunal'.
