Nobel Committee Criticized for Awarding Peace Prize to Navanethem Pillay
South African activist and former UN human rights chief Navanethem Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, drawing sharp criticism for alleged anti-Israel bias.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African legal activist and former UN human-rights chief. The decision has been met with significant criticism, with some asserting that Pillay’s career has been marked by extreme anti-Israel bias.
Pillay’s selection for the prize has been linked to her past accusations against Israel, including claims of “genocide” in Gaza. Critics point to a decades-long pattern of what they describe as an obsessive anti-Israel stance throughout her career.
In previous years, Pillay has accused Israel of being an “apartheid” state, a characterization disputed by those who note that Jews and Arabs reportedly hold equal rights and voting access in Israel, unlike the historical apartheid regime in South Africa. During conflicts between Israel and Hamas, Pillay led a UN investigation in 2021 that focused on alleged Israeli violations of Palestinian rights, with critics stating it insufficiently addressed Palestinian misconduct. She has also drawn controversy for comparing Israel’s actions during conflicts to the Rwandan genocide.
The U.S. administration, along with more than two dozen other countries, had previously called for an end to her Independent International Commission of Inquiry, citing concerns over its focus.
Critics contend that Pillay’s work has largely overlooked human rights violations in other nations, including authoritarian regimes. This alleged bias against Israel, they argue, fuels antisemitism globally and emboldens groups like Hamas.
Pillay’s inclusion among Nobel Peace Prize laureates has drawn comparisons to past recipients, such as Yasser Arafat, whose award was followed by an intifada against Israel. The criticism suggests that the prize is not always a reflection of genuine peace promotion.
