Noah Wyle Recounts Humiliating Encounter with Eddie Murphy as a Child
The 'ER' star shared on Amy Poehler's podcast that Murphy cursed at him when he asked for an autograph as a nine-year-old.
Noah Wyle, recently named People's Sexiest Man Alive, has revealed a less-than-glamorous childhood encounter with comedy icon Eddie Murphy. During an appearance on Amy Poehler's podcast, "Good Hang," Wyle, now 55, recounted asking Murphy for an autograph when he was nine years old.
"I met Eddie once when I was a kid," Wyle told Poehler. "I asked him for his autograph and I said, 'I really like you on SNL.' And he goes, 'What are you doing up that late?' And I said, 'Duh.' And I said, 'Can I have your autograph?' He goes, 'F--k off, man.'"
The actor shared that this story has become a piece of family lore, so much so that his daughter once gifted him a humorous recreation of the moment for his birthday. His daughter had obtained a picture of Murphy and written on it, "Dear Noah, you're a great kid, Eddie Murphy," with a deliberate misspelling of Murphy's first name.
Wyle stated that the incident has influenced his interactions with fans requesting autographs. "I always sign an autograph," he said. "Whenever a nine-year-old needs an autograph from me, I sign that so fast."
The "ER" star also expressed interest in hosting "Saturday Night Live," a show he grew up watching and which featured Murphy as a cast member. Wyle mentioned he had recently spoken with "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels about the possibility.
