A memorial service will not be held for Kristopher Karolkiewicz, the Michigan father who murdered his wife, six children, and then himself at their Grand Haven home. Police believe Karolkiewicz, 47, shot his wife, Amanda, 39, first, before killing their children: Keegan, 15; Bennett, 12; Caroline, 11; Ella, 11; Smith, 11; and Theodore, 5. He then set their $750,000 home on fire and died by suicide.
Amanda Karolkiewicz and her children died from gunshot wounds to the head. Their deaths have been ruled homicides, while Kristopher Karolkiewicz's death was ruled a suicide.
Amanda's family plans to hold a celebration of life for her and the children at their local church later this month. While Kristopher Karolkiewicz was mentioned in their obituaries as a father and husband, he will not be memorialized at the family service.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was an elementary school teacher, author, and former Miss Michigan pageant contestant. Her obituary described her as a devoted mother who loved her family and modeled a life of curiosity, courage, and self-sacrifice. She had a desire to adopt from China, fulfilling this by adopting daughters Caroline and Ella in 2017 and 2018. The family had recently traveled to China so the girls could visit their birth country.
Her obituary stated that Amanda and her sister Molly were inseparable, though her father, Gary Anderson, noted that she had no contact with his family at times. Anderson, 78, told The Detroit News that he struggles to understand the events leading to the tragedy but acknowledged aware of some failures in the couple's marriage.
Keegan, the eldest child, was preparing to start high school and enjoyed cooking and running cross-country. Bennett loved fishing, singing, and had recently earned his hunting license. Caroline was remembered for her love of reading, playing musical instruments, and swimming. Ella was close with her mother and loved fashion and crafting. Smith was a vegetarian who enjoyed playing outdoors. The youngest, Theodore, was described as adventurous.
Investigators believe the incident occurred on July 24. The bodies of Kristopher and Amanda Karolkiewicz were found in their bedroom, while the children were discovered in their respective bedrooms. Captain Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office stated that at least eight shots were fired from a semi-automatic handgun before the house was set ablaze.
Reports emerged that the couple's marriage was strained due to Kristopher Karolkiewicz's alleged affair with an intern. While family spokesperson Emily Jones stated that loved ones could not confirm the validity of online posts detailing marital issues, she noted the sadness of anyone feeling unable to seek support outside of anonymous platforms. Anderson, while aware of marital difficulties, stated he had no idea what ultimately happened, adding that only Kristopher and Amanda truly knew the cause of their marital struggles.
