No Criminal Investigation into 11-Year-Old's Death, Police Say
West Mercia Police confirmed that the death of Miya Deamer-Jones, found in a village park, is not being treated as suspicious.
The death of an 11-year-old schoolgirl whose body was discovered in a village park is not being treated as a criminal investigation, West Mercia Police announced.
Miya Deamer-Jones was found deceased in a park near Elmley Castle Cricket Club in Worcestershire on Sunday. Police stated that their inquiries have found no evidence of suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement in her death.
Chief Inspector Daniel Pilkington described the incident as "deeply upsetting" and acknowledged its impact on the local community and beyond. "Our thoughts remain with them, her friends and everyone who knew and loved her as they face an unimaginable loss," Pilkington said.
Police confirmed that officers worked "tirelessly and thoroughly" to establish the circumstances surrounding Miya's death, maintaining an open mind and examining all available lines of inquiry. As no suspicious elements were found, the case will now be passed to HM Coroner for their review, which is standard procedure.
The force also issued a plea for restraint on social media, asking the public to consider the impact of speculation and unverified information on the grieving family. "We understand that people often turn to social media in moments of shock and sadness," Pilkington noted, "but speculation and sharing unverified information can cause additional distress to a family already living through every parent’s worst nightmare."
Miya, who had three sisters, lived with her mother and at least one sibling in Elmley Castle. Neighbors described her as a "cheeky character" and a "happy girl," with one local adding, "They are a really nice family. My heart goes out to them."
