Nearly eight weeks after Brooke Hanlon, a 35-year-old therapist, was found fatally stabbed in her Chester, New Jersey, home, authorities have yet to name a suspect or person of interest in the homicide case. The prolonged lack of leads has left her close friends and family in a state of confusion and frustration.
"Honestly, it’s been confusing, heartbreaking and incredibly frustrating," said Jennifer Payne, Hanlon’s graduate school friend and former roommate. "Nothing prepares you for unexpectedly losing a loved one, let alone to murder. But this case has been so unusual even for a murder."
Payne described her current state as a "constant state of ‘functional freeze,’ going through the motions of life but still stuck trying to process and accept that Brooke is gone." She added, "I’m already someone who struggles with ‘not knowing’ and wanting all the information as much as possible. So, the near total silence leaves your mind racing to fill in the blanks."
Brooke Hanlon and her husband, James "Conor" Hanlon, began dating in Boston around 2014 while Brooke attended Northeastern University, where she earned a master's degree in counseling psychology in May 2015. She began her professional career as a therapist in the Boston area in July 2015. The couple married in Montauk, New York, on June 12, 2021. They purchased a home in Chester, New Jersey, in September 2023, and Brooke transitioned her career to the state, taking a psychotherapist position in Bernardsville. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in July 2025.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office officially announced the death was being investigated as a homicide on June 13, 2026, a week after emergency personnel responded to the Hanlon residence. Conor Hanlon initially called 911 to report his wife was "not breathing" and had a "laceration" on her chest, with the call being dispatched as a medical response for cardiac arrest. The medical examiner later confirmed the cause of death as "multiple sharp force injuries."
Investigation Developments
Computer-aided dispatch logs obtained by Fox News Digital detailed significant investigative activity at the couple's Pottersville Road property from June 6 through June 12, 2026, including continuous rotations of detectives, crime scene investigation units, and evidence processing. Conor Hanlon retained legal counsel, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit has maintained communication with his attorney. On July 10, 2026, officials released the full 911 call, in which a frantic Conor Hanlon is guided through CPR compressions by dispatchers before noting "there’s blood everywhere."
Chester Township Mayor Tim Drag issued a statement extending condolences to the victim’s family and stating, "To protect the integrity of that investigation, I will not comment on specific facts or circumstances at this time. We are committed to supporting law enforcement’s efforts and ensuring the safety of our residents."
As the investigation continues, Payne emphasized her primary concern is honoring Brooke Hanlon's life and ensuring her young daughter knows how loved her mother was. "What I’m feeling is only a fraction of their pain. More than anything, I hope they know how deeply Brooke was loved and how wonderful of a family they were to her," Payne said. "I want them, especially Brooke’s daughter, to remember her beautiful and full life that I was so grateful to be part of, and not just the ending to it. But the longer this drags out, the more focus is put on her death, when Brooke was so much more than that to so many people."
