NJ Teacher Pleads Guilty in Relationship With Student
Former educator admits guilt in child endangerment case, faces five years in prison.

A former New Jersey elementary school teacher has pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, according to an announcement from Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland on Oct. 30.
Laura Caron, 36, faces five years in state prison as part of a plea agreement. She was charged in January 2025, after an investigation revealed she had a child with a former student who was 13 at the time of conception. The child is now five years old.
Prosecutors allege Caron, who taught the boy and his brother in fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School, engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with the student when he was 11, a relationship that continued until he was 15. The boy’s father reportedly noticed a resemblance between Caron’s child and his son in a Facebook photo in December 2024, leading to the investigation.
The former teacher will be required to surrender her teaching license and will be barred from all future public employment. She will also be evaluated to determine if her behavior is repetitive or compulsive, which could impact her sentencing. Caron is scheduled for formal sentencing on January 8, 2027. She will be placed on lifetime parole and must register on the Megan’s Law Offender Registry.
Despite the charges and plea, the former student, now approximately 21 years old, has defended Caron. He told the Daily Mail that he initiated the relationship and that Caron did not groom, rape, or manipulate him. He stated that if it were up to him, she would not have been incarcerated.
Investigators uncovered allegations from the victim's siblings, including claims that the victim's brother witnessed Caron assaulting his sleeping sibling, and that the victim's sister woke up to find her brother in Caron’s bed. Caron was indicted in June 2025.
"Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust," Sutherland stated at the time of her initial charges.
