NJ Mayor Lunges at Resident, Shouts Threats During Heated Council Meeting
Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini reportedly charged at a critic and had to be restrained amid a chaotic public hearing.

Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini lunged at a resident and shouted threats during a contentious public hearing Wednesday night, leading to several individuals restraining the mayor. The incident occurred during an employment appeal hearing for Ken Gerber, the town's former director of Community Development and a retired police chief, who was in the process of accusing Bianchini's administration of wrongdoing.
According to reports, Bianchini charged at Michael Sawka, a vocal critic of the mayor, yelling, “I am getting you, I am f—ing getting you!” Witnesses and footage indicate that ex-police officers and other attendees intervened to restrain Bianchini. Councilman Perry Doyle Jr., himself a retired police officer, reportedly escorted the mayor to a conference room.
Sawka, who was wearing a shirt endorsing a rival political candidate, had been speaking when the mayor allegedly reacted to a gesture from Sawka, which Bianchini later claimed was hostile towards his daughter. Sawka demanded Bianchini's arrest for assault and verbal threats, refusing to leave the meeting until persuaded by an attorney.
Bianchini, a Republican seeking reelection, later acknowledged that his behavior was inappropriate but defended his actions as justified by what he described as months of targeted harassment against his family. "My wife and daughter were both physically and verbally attacked. Were my actions wrong? Probably. Were they justified? Absolutely!" Bianchini stated on Facebook.
The meeting also involved accusations from Pemberton Business Administrator Rosemary Flaherty against Gerber, alleging mismanagement and inappropriate workplace conduct. Gerber and his supporters contend these accusations are politically motivated retaliations, linked to Gerber's friendship with a political opponent of Bianchini.
The town's political climate is described as deeply polarized. Two police officers, including a K9 unit, were called to the scene to manage the situation following the physical altercation.
