NJ Mayor Lunges at Resident, Shouts Threats During Chaotic Council Meeting

Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini, a Republican, lunged toward a resident during a heated township council meeting on Wednesday night, requiring intervention from others present to restrain him. Dramatic video footage from the meeting shows Bianchini shouting threats at the resident, Michael Sawka, before being pulled away.

Sawka, identified as a vocal critic of the mayor, stated that he was seated and remained calm throughout the confrontation. However, Bianchini and his family members claimed Sawka and another resident made offensive comments directed at the mayor's wife and daughter during the meeting. Sawka was reportedly seen gesturing toward the back of the room and making an obscene gesture toward Bianchini shortly before the mayor's charge.

Following the incident, Bianchini admitted to losing his temper, telling WPVI-TV, "I just basically snapped." He acknowledged his conduct was inappropriate but added, "It was in the heat of the moment. I'm not gonna get anybody." He also defended his actions, stating, "Was it wrong? Absolutely. Was it justified? Absolutely. And I would do it again if I had to. Don't attack my family."

Sawka has filed a municipal court complaint seeking assault and terroristic threats charges against Bianchini. Pemberton Township police have not yet commented on whether charges will be pursued. Fox News Digital has reached out to the police department and the mayor's office for comment.

The Pemberton Township Democratic Club issued a statement following the confrontation, asserting that the township requires leaders who can maintain composure and professionalism. They also encouraged residents to participate in the upcoming election, where Bianchini is seeking to retain his mayoral position.
