Pemberton Township, New Jersey – Republican Mayor Matthew Bianchini, 59, has lost his reelection bid, conceding to Democratic challenger Belinda Fontanez on Wednesday. The loss comes just weeks after Bianchini was physically restrained during a contentious town meeting where he charged at a resident.

During the October 21 meeting, Bianchini was captured on video leaving his seat, pointing at resident Michael Sawka, and moving across the room toward the public gallery. He was intercepted by other attendees and held back against a wall. As he was led away, Bianchini was heard shouting threats at Sawka.

Bianchini later told WPVI that he "snapped" after Sawka and another resident allegedly made rude comments to his wife and daughter. He stated, "Don't attack my family. I think any good husband, any good father, would've done just what I did." He also apologized for his language, calling it "in the heat of the moment."

Sawka denied making any comments toward Bianchini's family and told local news he remained calm throughout the incident. He expressed a desire for Bianchini to resign and cease political involvement.

Fontanez, a former township employee who had previously sued over allegations concerning former Mayor Jack Tompkins, secured nearly 60 percent of the vote. Bianchini garnered less than 30 percent.

Bianchini issued a statement following his concession, thanking his supporters and offering congratulations to Fontanez. "The voters of Pemberton Township have spoken, and the results are clear," he stated. "I offer Belinda Fontanez my sincere congratulations on her victory. As she prepares to take on the responsibility of leading our community, she has my full support for a smooth transition."
