NJ Governor Demands Lt. Governor's Resignation Over Sexual Harassment Findings

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill has called for the resignation of Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, setting a Friday deadline for him to step down following an independent investigation that substantiated sexual harassment and two ethics violations.

Investigators concluded that Caldwell made a sexually charged remark to a female staffer, stating, "you young women are looking for young sperm," after she indicated a friend was not interested in a romantic relationship with him. The report found Caldwell's denial of the comment not credible and determined the remark constituted sexual harassment. The staffer subsequently attempted to create distance from Caldwell at work and avoid traveling with him.

The investigation also substantiated two ethics violations. Caldwell was found to have brought personal guests to ticketed events without prior ethics clearance or payment, and repeatedly attempted to secure a promotion for a state employee with whom he was involved in a romantic relationship. Notably, Caldwell continued bringing unpaid guests to events even after being notified of the investigation, including on May 23, the day after he was formally informed.

Four days after being notified of the investigation, Caldwell used his state email to advocate for his romantic partner's promotion in another department, forwarding her resume and a letter of interest without disclosing their relationship. Investigators stated this occurred despite prior training and warnings regarding such conduct.

Caldwell denied the allegations in a May response to investigators, calling them false and misleading and expressing confidence that the facts would exonerate him. He denied propositions or asking women out while conducting official business.

Sherrill, a Democrat, stated that the substantiated violations represent a "pattern of behavior" that persisted despite warnings and training. "The lieutenant governor’s resignation is necessary and in the best interest of New Jersey residents," she said.

Sherrill also drew a parallel to federal politics, stating that President Trump "continues to undermine confidence in public service at the federal level" and that she would not tolerate "a culture that sweeps misconduct under the rug" in New Jersey. The governor's office has not yet received Caldwell's resignation.

The investigation was initiated in May after the state's chief ethics officer received an anonymous complaint alleging inappropriate behavior toward women and ethics violations. Caldwell was formally notified of the investigation on May 22. Images of Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell and Gov.
