Nithya Raman's Attack on LAPD Chief Labeled "Idiotic and Dangerous"
A recent campaign video by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, criticizing LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, has drawn sharp criticism for its rhetoric and perceived implications.
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman is facing criticism for a recent campaign video that targeted Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell. The video, which featured a prominent red "X" over images of McDonnell, was labeled "idiotic and dangerous" by critics, who argue it promotes an anti-public order and anti-private property stance.
Raman's campaign video, themed "Only you can stop fascist liars," apparently identified McDonnell and incumbent Mayor Karen Bass as the subjects of this label. According to reports, the video criticized Bass's appointment of McDonnell and McDonnell's stance on the LAPD's cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. McDonnell has stated the LAPD will not enforce immigration law but will protect federal agents arresting violent felons in the country illegally when their safety is threatened.
Raman, in the ad, stated that her chosen police chief would "respond to the needs that immigrant Angelenos have and that every resident of Los Angeles has." Critics interpret this to mean a reluctance by the LAPD to back up federal immigration agents pursuing undocumented individuals accused of crimes. The commentary suggests this approach would create a sanctuary city where illegal felons face no fear from authorities, leaving law-abiding citizens vulnerable.
Furthermore, the criticism extends to Raman's past calls to "defund the police" and her opposition to bans on homeless encampments, even near schools. The ad's imagery, suggesting McDonnell should be "snuffed out," has also drawn concern, with comparisons made to past political controversies involving graphic imagery.
Commentators have described Raman's rhetoric as "embarrassingly juvenile" and characteristic of "ignorant, self-involved college students." The use of the term "fascist" to describe Mayor Bass, characterized as a liberal, and Chief McDonnell, described as a moderate centrist, has been widely disputed. Critics argue that such labeling demonstrates a detachment from reality and suggests Raman is ill-equipped to lead Los Angeles, potentially steering the city toward public safety and fiscal instability.
Heather Mac Donald, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author, contributed to the commentary, noting Raman's perceived reliance on existing law-and-order infrastructure while criticizing it.
