Nithya Raman Nearly Tied with Karen Bass in LA Mayoral Fundraising

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman has a slight fundraising edge over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass as the election approaches, with both candidates reporting totals around $2.5 million. According to the latest filings, Bass has raised approximately $2.51 million in direct contributions and matching funds, while Raman has secured $2.53 million.

Both campaigns have benefited significantly from the city's matching fund program, which provides $6 in public funds for every $1 raised from local donors. Both candidates have received at least $1 million through this program.

Raman currently holds more cash on hand, with $1.9 million compared to Bass's nearly $1.2 million, based on financial records. This financial standing comes as Raman gains momentum in the race. A recent poll indicated Raman leading Bass 39% to 28%, though Bass's campaign has disputed the poll's findings, labeling it an outlier.

In a notable development, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger hosted Raman for a meeting with influential figures from Hollywood, business, and civic sectors at his Santa Monica office. While Schwarzenegger has not formally endorsed Raman, the event provided her access to a network of potential supporters.

Both campaigns are highlighting their fundraising figures as indicators of strength. Raman's campaign stated, “Mayor Bass has the backing of the political establishment and corporations, but our campaign is powered by an extraordinary wave of grassroots support from Angelenos who are ready to change the direction of our city.”

Conversely, Bass's campaign chief strategist, Julie C. Rodriguez, remarked, “The mayor and her entire operation have been hard at work doing everything needed to win,” including running ads to contrast the mayor’s policies with Raman’s record and positions.

External groups are also contributing financially to the race. The Western States Regional Council of Carpenters and hedge fund manager Aaron Sosnick have collectively supported Raman with $6 million. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Protective League and Airbnb have collectively spent at least $4.55 million in support of Bass.
