Nithya Raman Faces Scrutiny Over DSA Affiliation in Los Angeles Mayoral Race

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman is facing questions about her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and her stance on potential policies associated with the group. Critics argue that Raman has been evasive when asked directly about whether, as mayor, she would advance DSA-LA's agenda, which includes policies such as the expropriation of private property, defunding the police, and easing restrictions on homeless encampments.

Raman, who has been endorsed by DSA-LA and is described as a member of the City Council's "socialist faction," stated in a recent interview that she would "co-govern" with DSA-LA if elected mayor. However, she also added that she would co-govern with "everyone." This broad statement has led to criticism that it lacks clarity and avoids a direct commitment on specific DSA-backed policies.

While Raman has not explicitly detailed her plans regarding the more controversial aspects of the DSA's platform, the group's published program includes proposals such as funding safe drug-injection sites, using public funds for grocery stores and internet services, and allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections. Raman and her council colleagues have previously supported the noncitizen voting proposal.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League, representing 8,700 LAPD officers, has publicly opposed Raman's mayoral bid. The union is reportedly working to educate voters about the DSA and its connection to Raman's campaign.

Critics contend that Raman's refusal to directly address specific planks of the DSA's platform makes her appear indecisive and unforthright to voters. The core question raised by her campaign's critics is whether Raman is running to represent the general public of Los Angeles or a specific, more fringe political group seeking to influence city governance.

Raman's tenure on the City Council has seen votes to reduce police funding and shift resources away from policing, actions that have drawn criticism from law enforcement advocates. Concerns have also been raised about potential efforts by the DSA faction to exert influence over the Los Angeles Police Department itself.
