To mark World EV Day 2026, a definitive ranking of all 161 electric vehicles currently on sale has been compiled by Auto Express in collaboration with the Daily Mail and This is Money. The assessment evaluated each vehicle based on key factors including price, range, comfort, practicality, and performance.

The Nissan Leaf has been named the top-rated electric vehicle. The third-generation model, produced at the Sunderland factory, was praised by Auto Express testers as an "outstanding electric family car that offers excellent value and hits the sweet spot in every area." With a range of up to 386 miles and a 10-80% charge time of just over 30 minutes, the Leaf also features a Google-powered infotainment system and a 437-litre boot. EV Market Growth
Electric vehicle adoption is increasing, with registrations surpassing one million by mid-last year. Zap-Map estimates there were around 2.1 million battery-powered cars on UK roads by the end of August. The variety of available EVs has expanded significantly, from the compact Citroen Ami to luxury models like the Rolls-Royce Spectre, catering to a wide range of consumer needs as manufacturers accelerate their transition away from fossil fuels ahead of the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales.
Steve Walker of Auto Express stated that the ranking aims to be the "ultimate guide for drivers, helping them understand which electric cars stand out and which fail to meet the required standard." He also highlighted the "incredible breadth of choice now available to EV buyers," suggesting that there is an electric car for almost everyone.
