Nine law enforcement officers sustained injuries when a second-story deck collapsed while they were attempting to arrest a registered sex offender in Huntsville, Missouri, on July 21.
The group, which included members of the US Marshals Service, the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, the Moberly Police Department, and the North Missouri Drug Task Force, were on the deck of an apartment building on Vaunita Street when the structure gave way.
Body camera footage released by the US Marshals Service captured the moment the officers fell. The operation was intended to apprehend Jacob Alexander Munoz, 26, who had failed to register as a sex offender. Munoz was convicted of possessing child pornography in July 2022, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Sex Offender Registry. The offense involved a victim between the ages of nine and 13 and occurred in March 2020 in Randolph County.
Seven of the nine officers were treated and released from the hospital for injuries described as 'consistent with a pretty serious fall.' These injuries included broken bones, but were not life-threatening. Four of the injured officers were Deputy US Marshals, two were from the North Missouri Drug Task Force, and one was a county deputy.
Steven Lewis, the US Marshal for the Eastern District of Missouri, described the incident as if 'a trap door opened,' leaving the officers with little time to react. He noted that none of the officers' firearms discharged during the fall.
Munoz was taken into custody later the same day. He was released from confinement on September 24, 2024, and his parole is set to end in June 2028. As of the incident, Munoz was listed as 'compliant' on the Missouri sex offender registry.
The US Marshals Service stated that the incident highlights the unpredictable dangers law enforcement faces and the preparedness of teams under extreme conditions. A resident of the apartment complex described the building as a 'hazard' and a 'danger' due to its condition.
