Nine has issued a warning to Today show host Karl Stefanovic following a controversial podcast interview with far-right British activist Tommy Robinson. The episode, which discussed Islam, immigration, and Australian politics, was removed from Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and The Karl Stefanovic Show's YouTube channel less than 12 hours after its release.
While Nine emphasized that Stefanovic's podcast is an independent production with no affiliation to the network, a spokesperson stated that the matter is being taken seriously. "The Karl Stefanovic Show is a completely independent production. Nine has no involvement, including in the guest selection and other editorial processes," the spokesperson told the Daily Mail. "However, Nine is taking this matter seriously."
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is described as a prominent figure in right-wing activism in the UK with a history of convictions including violence, public order offenses, contempt of court, stalking, and financial and immigration fraud. In the 55-minute interview, Robinson stated he has been made a "figure of hate" and believes he is speaking for those who fear doing the same. He asserted that he presents "facts, not opinions" regarding immigration and Islam, and suggested that Australians might share his concerns but fear speaking out.
Stefanovic had promoted the interview on social media, calling Robinson "the ultimate disruptor" and suggesting the conversation was "a wild chat you can't miss." He also made a crude remark about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a promotional clip.
The removal of the interview prompted a reaction from Australian politician Pauline Hanson, who accused the Nine Network of attempting to "sack" Stefanovic. Hanson, a self-proclaimed "good friend" of Stefanovic, uploaded the removed interview to her own YouTube channel, framing it as a warning about immigration and extremism that Australians need to confront. She criticized Nine's management and ratings, arguing that Stefanovic was raising important issues.
Public reaction to the interview was divided. Some commenters on social media slammed Stefanovic for platforming Robinson, with one calling him a "convicted fraudster and violent man." Others expressed support, with one user stating, "So awesome to see you interviewing Tommy Robinson." Another commenter thanked Stefanovic for interviewing a guest that "legacy media refuses to do."
Stefanovic launched his podcast in January and has featured several right-wing guests, including Pauline Hanson, Barnaby Joyce, Sean Bell, former Prime Ministers Tony Abbott and John Howard, and Coalition figures Alex Antic, Matt Canavan, and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.
