Nine Florida High Schoolers Arrested After Beating Student Who Intervened in Bullying

Nine students at Harmony High School in Osceola County, Florida, have been arrested following a severe physical assault on a fellow student who intervened when he witnessed bullying. The victim, 17, was attacked after confronting students who were harassing a girl in the school cafeteria.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, the incident began when the victim told some students to stop throwing carrots at a girl. This led to an argument, and the victim left the cafeteria with the girl. After school, as the victim walked towards his car, he was attacked by two students involved in the earlier confrontation. Eight other students then joined in the assault, resulting in the victim being beaten by a total of nine individuals.

Cellphone footage captured the attack, showing multiple students striking the victim while others can be heard encouraging the violence. The victim's girlfriend reportedly intervened to stop the assault. He was subsequently taken to the hospital by his mother, where he received 11 stitches for injuries to his head.

Osceola County Sheriff Captain Kimberly Montes described the attack as cowardly and a serious incident. "This was not one-on-one, two-on-one -- this was nine students against one," Montes stated, emphasizing the severity of the beating and noting that the victim was fortunate not to sustain more serious injuries. She added, "We tell kids all the time, ‘Stand up for somebody else!’ It takes a lot of courage to do that. He did this and these nine students that beat him up are the ones that are cowards."

Police identified the nine suspects through the video evidence. Two 18-year-olds, Quianelle Antonio Reyes-Cintron and Bryan Alexander Ramirez, were booked into the Osceola County Jail. The other seven, including a 17-year-old, five 16-year-olds, and a 14-year-old, were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. All nine students have been charged with felony aggravated battery and felony inciting a riot.

Despite the age of some of the arrested students, the sheriff advocated for all nine to be tried as adults. The Osceola County School District Superintendent Mark Shanoff condemned the violence, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated within the school district.
