Nike CEO Acknowledges Shift Back to Sport Amid Stock Plunge

Nike CEO Elliott Hill has signaled a strategic pivot back to the company's core focus on sports, a move that follows a significant downturn in the company's stock price. In a recent internal memo, Hill stated, "Over the past year, we've put sport at the center of everything we do. We're seeing encouraging signs of progress, but we have more work to do to win over the long term."

The memo was issued shortly before Nike's stock closed at $33.87 per share, its lowest point in over a decade. The company has also announced plans for further layoffs in 2027, having already reduced its workforce twice this year.

This strategic recalibration comes after a period where Nike engaged in several high-profile marketing campaigns that aligned with progressive social and political stances. These included collaborations with Colin Kaepernick, advertisements addressing racial injustice following George Floyd's death, and partnerships with figures like Dylan Mulvaney, which drew backlash. An "Equality" commercial in 2017 also featured messages on social issues.

Nike's stock reached an all-time closing high of $177.51 per share in November 2021. Since then, the stock has fallen approximately 81%. Critics suggest that the company's embrace of politically charged campaigns may have alienated a segment of its customer base, contributing to the stock's decline.

Another point of contention was the delayed release of basketball star Caitlin Clark's signature sneaker. While Clark is a top-selling athlete, Nike reportedly prioritized the launch of A'ja Wilson's sneaker, a decision that has been questioned by sports commentators.

In his memo, CEO Hill also outlined organizational changes, including the establishment of a new campus in India, efforts to modernize the supply chain, and a restructuring into three geographic regions: Americas, APGC (Asia Pacific and Greater China), and EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa). However, the emphasis on putting sport back at the center is seen by observers as a direct response to the financial performance and market perception over the past few years.

The broader trend of injecting politics into athletic brands has been observed to potentially shift consumer attention, a notion reinforced by perceived declines in NBA ratings following 2020. Nike's apparent acknowledgment of this trend marks a potential turning point for the company as it seeks to regain its footing in the market.
