A Nigerian migrant, Gift Oladele, 24, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, including 17 years in jail and an extended eight-year license, for the rape and sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman in Wrexham, Wales. The attack occurred on September 7, 2025, as the victim was walking home from a night out. Oladele had previously been jailed in 2022 for a sexually motivated attack and was on bail for another rape allegation in Manchester from November 2024 when he committed the Wrexham assault.
Oladele, who entered the UK with valid clearance until 2014 but remained unlawfully, had successfully appealed a previous deportation order to Nigeria by arguing that removal would breach his Article 8 rights to private and family life. An immigration tribunal in June 2023 ruled in his favor, deeming deportation disproportionate despite the severity of his offenses. The Home Office's subsequent appeals were rejected.
The victim, who was 19 at the time of the attack, recounted the terrifying ordeal, describing how Oladele overpowered her, covering her mouth and forcing her into the woods. She reported that Oladele made disturbing comments after the assault, including, "I think you've had enough now. At least you have been raped by someone good-looking."
Following the assault, Oladele threatened the victim if she reported him. However, she immediately informed her parents upon returning home, and police were called. She described experiencing numbness and hysteria, with thoughts of her family flashing through her mind as she feared for her life. The emotional toll of the assault led to an eating disorder and severe mental distress.
Oladele was arrested the day after the attack and later found guilty of rape and sexual assault by a jury at Mold Crown Court in March. At Caernarfon Crown Court on April 30, he received his sentence, along with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifetime restraining order to protect the victim.
Chief Inspector Caroline Mullen-Hurst of Wrexham police described Oladele as a "dangerous predator" and praised the victim's courage. A Home Office spokesman stated that the government will "always seek to deport foreign criminals at the earliest possible opportunity" and noted that over 70,000 illegal migrants and foreign criminals have been returned since the current government took office.
