Nicolas Cage Seeks to Save Malibu Home From Growing Sinkhole

Nicolas Cage has taken steps to protect his $10.5 million Malibu home from a rapidly expanding sinkhole that formed near the property on September 8. The actor, 62, filed three permits with the City of Malibu shortly after the sinkhole appeared.

Cage received approval for an emergency building permit that allows for sandbags to be placed against the beach and the exterior of his home. These measures are intended to provide wave protection and mitigate further coastal erosion. Additional permits were also granted for the removal of asphalt debris related to the sinkhole and for excavation to collect soil samples, in preparation for shoring installation.

The sinkhole initially measured approximately 30 feet by 30 feet. It has since grown significantly, encroaching on Cage's property and reaching the front of his house. Images from the scene show the sinkhole has consumed the actor's driveway, along with a portable toilet, ladders, and sections of a privacy fence.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the sinkhole. Emergency responders were dispatched to the area to address a gas leak. Cage, who primarily resides in Nevada, is not believed to have been at the Malibu residence when the sinkhole developed.

Following the sinkhole's emergence, the City of Malibu issued a mandatory evacuation order for all 31 homes on Sea Level Drive. Officials declared these residences unsafe due to a lack of vehicular access, which would prevent emergency services, such as fire and sheriff departments, from reaching them.

Cage purchased the 4,000-square-foot home in 2024. The property features a rooftop deck, private beach access, and ocean views. The actor has not publicly commented on the sinkhole incident. Weeks after the event, Cage and his wife, Riko Shibata, were seen attending the opening night of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art on September 19.
