Nicolas Cage's John Madden Draws Fan Ire Ahead of Biopic Release

A preview clip from the forthcoming John Madden biopic, financed by Amazon MGM Studios, has ignited a wave of concern among fans, many of whom are criticizing Nicolas Cage's portrayal of the iconic NFL coach and broadcaster. The film, produced by Escape Artists and helmed by former Giants owner Steve Tisch, carries an estimated budget of $75 million and is slated for a limited theatrical release on November 11.

The viral clip, shared by Amazon to offer a sneak peek, features Cage as Madden in the broadcast booth alongside Joel Murray as Pat Summerall. However, the depiction has drawn sharp criticism on social media platforms like X.

"Wow!! This looks AWFUL!!" one user, @thebigsmooth, posted on X. Another commenter noted Cage's delivery lacked Madden's distinctive "boom," describing it instead as a "Forrest Gump-like" impression. The scene depicts Cage's Madden using his telestrator to make indecipherable scribbles while explaining a play, prompting disbelief from the crew in the back, who question who would understand the analysis.

Madden is credited as the first broadcaster to utilize the telestrator, a device that has since become a standard tool in sports broadcasting. Its prominent role in the preview clip appears to have been a point of contention for viewers.

Criticism has extended beyond Cage's performance, with some fans questioning the overall production and casting. "This is basically a desecration of Madden’s legacy. Astoundingly bad," wrote @markcalorian on X. Others suggested alternative casting, with some preferring comedian Frank Caliendo for an impression.

Some online commentary also focused on the portrayal of Pat Summerall, with questions raised about the character's appearance. "That’s a really bad impersonation job of John Madden. How did this get greenlit?" asked @FBAShaka on X.

John Madden, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 85, was a Super Bowl-winning coach with the Oakland Raiders before transitioning to broadcasting in 1979. He retired from the booth in 2009 after a distinguished career that included 16 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Analyst/Personality. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2010.
