The former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) portrays the Deputy Prime Minister in Sky One's "The Wargame," a show that simulates the British government's response to a Russian attack.
This casting has drawn particular ire from political opponents, given Sturgeon's long-standing advocacy for Scotland's independence from the UK. Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay stated that Sturgeon was "selling her soul for a strange role in a TV drama," suggesting the appearance might alienate her nationalist supporters.
The show features real-world political figures and military experts role-playing various scenarios. Other participants include Penny Mordaunt, Sayeeda Warsi, Harriet Harman, and Jim Murphy. The mock UK cabinet faces a team of Russia experts led by writer Keir Giles. Sources involved in the production reportedly found irony in Sturgeon's role defending the Union.
Critics have also pointed to the perceived contradiction of Sturgeon discussing UK defense, noting her past calls for the removal of the Trident nuclear deterrent from the naval base at Faslane. The airing of "The Wargame" follows recent legal troubles involving Sturgeon's estranged husband, Peter Murrell, who was sentenced for embezzling funds from the SNP.
Sturgeon has denied any knowledge of Murrell's actions, stating she was misled. An inquiry into the fallout from the scandal has been launched by Westminster, with the Scottish Affairs Committee seeking to question various former SNP figures. Sturgeon has been approached for comment.
