Rapper Nicki Minaj's recent appearance at a rally supporting former President Donald Trump in Michigan has drawn significant commentary, with many online observers joking that her political alignment has led to a drastic change in her personal style, often described as a "MAGA makeunder."

Commenters and fans have noted Minaj's altered appearance, with some describing her as "unrecognizable" and a "MAGA woman." At the rally, Minaj wore a $4,000 Gucci ensemble, matching pumps, pink press-on nails, and blue contact lenses. Her hair was also described by some as appearing disheveled.

This perceived shift in style has led to widespread speculation online, with many suggesting that Minaj may have lost access to her usual styling team, often humorously referred to as her "gay glam team." One widely circulated comment on Threads read, "This current Nicki era is giving ‘I no longer have access to the Gays or the Theys.’"

Professional stylists have also weighed in on Minaj's appearance. Kayla Lofaro, a hair stylist and owner of Discotheque Salon in Los Angeles, called the look "boring, boring, beige and predictable," adding that it was "unfortunate to see her blend in with the MAGA conservatives." Jessica Saint, a makeup artist with 25 years of experience, described the look as "trashy MAGA Stepford Barbie."

Hairstylist Tucker Cinalli noted a perceived correlation between Minaj's political leanings and the styling of her wigs. "The parallel of Nicki going MAGA and the stiffness of her wig should actually be studied," he said. "The deeper she gets, the stiffer that hair has gotten. She used to be the queen of a silky, water-like 50-inch bust down. Now we’re getting shake-and-go corner store wig updos. It’s impossible to ignore the correlation."

Minaj's political statements at the rally, including comments against gender-affirming care for children, have also drawn criticism, particularly from her LGBTQ+ fanbase. She reiterated her support for Trump, stating, "President Trump, it is an honor to stand with you every single time. And I will continue to support you forever and ever."

Regarding whether stylists refuse work based on political clients, Saint stated that artists' personal beliefs can influence their decisions. "We have agency, too. You can be incredibly talented and still decide that a paycheck isn’t worth the personal or professional cost of helping someone promote a message you oppose," she said. Saint revealed that she had previously turned down an offer to do Donald Trump's makeup during his first presidential campaign.

However, the existence of gay MAGA-supporting stylists cannot be entirely discounted. An anonymous New York City-based makeup artist acknowledged that "evil gays do exist and they now have a queen bee to turn to in Nicki Minaj."

Despite potential political objections, financial realities can influence job acceptance. The anonymous artist noted that "glam team rates have gone down" and artists "may still take the job as a means of putting food on the table." Additionally, some sources suggest that Minaj has a reputation for being difficult to work with, with some makeup artists reportedly refusing to work with her, which can lead to a professional team being "ghosted."
