Nick Saban Roasts Pat McAfee Over Studio Smoking Controversy

Legendary former college football coach Nick Saban playfully roasted ESPN personality Pat McAfee on air, referencing a recent controversy where McAfee appeared to smoke marijuana during his studio show.

During ESPN's "College GameDay" broadcast on Saturday, McAfee, in conversation with Saban, asked if the coach had ever used "ancient medicine to potentially calm the boys" or "burn some sage." Kirk Herbstreit, another ESPN personality, chimed in, suggesting McAfee does that "in the studio."

Saban responded with a sarcastic jab, stating, "I actually think if we had some of your gummies, we would have won more games." The comment, referencing McAfee's known association with cannabis products, drew laughter from those present.

McAfee, who hosts his own popular show on ESPN, was seen on camera earlier in the week appearing to smoke what resembled a marijuana joint in his studio. While the incident drew attention and online discussion, ESPN has indicated no disciplinary action will be taken against McAfee. This is not the first time McAfee has engaged in on-air activities that have raised eyebrows; he was previously seen using a vape pen during ESPN's coverage of the 2025 NFL Draft.
