Nick Reiner, 32, has been formally indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury on murder charges in connection with the stabbing deaths of his parents, acclaimed movie director Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, in their Los Angeles mansion last December. The indictment, returned on July 20 and unsealed this week, followed Reiner's arrest hours after his parents' bodies were discovered. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
Reiner faces two counts of murder, with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office has also alleged the use of a dangerous and deadly weapon in the killings of Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70. The district attorney's office has indicated that the death penalty is a possibility if Reiner is convicted, noting that the decision involves a rigorous process to examine all mitigating and aggravating circumstances.
Reiner is currently being held without bond and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing in September. He has a documented history of mental health and substance abuse issues. Hours before his parents' bodies were found, Reiner was reportedly seen having a loud argument with his father at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien.
The indictment and charges have cast a shadow over the Reiner family. Jake Reiner, Nick's older brother, shared his profound grief and disbelief in an essay, describing how his sister Romy delivered the news of their parents' murders and his brother's alleged involvement. Jake expressed the immense loss, stating that his parents would not be present for future life events and that he felt robbed of their presence. He described the ongoing trauma for himself and Romy, emphasizing the daily impact of their parents' violent deaths and the challenge of processing such a profound family tragedy.
Jake Reiner paid tribute to his parents, calling them the center of his life. He characterized his father as a Hollywood legend and his mother as the family's vital engine, backbone, and heart.
