Nick Knowles Confirms DIY SOS Shelved Amid BBC Budget Cuts

The long-running BBC home renovation program, DIY SOS, has been shelved and will not return in its current format, presenter Nick Knowles confirmed. He stated that the BBC has indicated the show may reappear in a "smaller and more cost effective" iteration in the future, but the original large-scale builds are unlikely to continue.

Knowles shared his emotional update via Instagram, calling it "the end of an era." He expressed gratitude to the thousands of volunteers, tradespeople, and suppliers who have contributed to the show over its 26-year run. The final episode is set to air, following reports last week that the program was among several BBC shows being rested as part of a wider £500 million savings plan.

The decision has reportedly devastated the show's team, who feel it is a "slap in the face" given the voluntary contributions and the genuine need the show addresses. Insiders suggested that the team fears the show may be permanently axed, with one source describing the situation as a "disgusting outrage" that a show helping "some of the neediest people in our country" is being shut down due to cost.

DIY SOS began in 1999 as a lower-budget series focused on fixing botched renovations. In 2010, it evolved into "DIY SOS: The Big Build," mobilizing local tradespeople and volunteers to undertake extensive home transformations for families facing severe illness or disability. The current series, Series 35, has featured episodes such as "Bringing Dan Home," which depicted a community effort to adapt a house for a teenager with complex disabilities.

In response to the news, the BBC stated that they have "taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin off show instead from producers South Shore." This new program, "DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life," is planned to revisit past successful transformations and expand the brand in a more cost-effective manner.

Knowles recently shared his "disappointment" and acknowledged the financial realities at the BBC. He also took a trip to Cornwall to "clear his head," sharing his appreciation for fan support during this period of uncertainty.
