Nick Knowles Confirms DIY SOS Format Change Amid BBC Budget Cuts

Presenter Nick Knowles has confirmed that the BBC has informed him that the popular home renovation show "DIY SOS" will not return in its current format, citing budget cuts.

Knowles shared an emotional video update on his Instagram, stating that while the show has been "shelved" rather than "ended," any future iteration would need to be "smaller and more cost effective." He expressed doubt that the show's core mission of building entire houses or significant charity spaces could be maintained on a reduced scale.

"I have asked the question, 'Will it ever come back in the form it is where it builds whole houses for people or builds these hospices and charity places?' and I’ve been told no," Knowles said. "If it comes back in the future it will be smaller and more cost effective. If you have ever been on DIY SOS and there are 26,000 of you out there who have, you will know you can't do that smaller. It is what is."

The final episode of the current format is set to air soon, following reports that "DIY SOS" was among several BBC programs being rested as part of a wider savings plan. The BBC aims to save £500 million.

Knowles, who has hosted the show for over two decades, expressed his gratitude to the tradespeople, volunteers, and suppliers who have contributed to the program's success. "It has been an honour to work with you all. We’ve loved every minute of it," he stated.

The BBC confirmed that a new spin-off series, "DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life," is planned for production by South Shore. This new show will revisit past successful transformations from the program and is intended to expand the brand in a more cost-effective manner.

However, sources close to the production team have expressed concerns that the decision could lead to the permanent cancellation of the show. Some described the situation as an "outrage," emphasizing the show's role in assisting needy individuals and communities, often with volunteer labor and donated materials. They feel the move is a "slap in the face" to those who have given their time and resources.

"DIY SOS" originally began in 1999 as a show focused on fixing botched renovations. In 2010, it evolved into "DIY SOS: The Big Build," which mobilized local tradespeople and volunteers to undertake extensive home transformations for families facing severe illness or disability.

Knowles recently shared throwback photos on Instagram, including one with Prince William and Prince Harry, reflecting on his time with the show. He also took a trip to Cornwall to "clear his head" amid the news, thanking fans for their support.
