Nick Clegg Poised for Potential $42 Million Windfall as UK Tech Firm Nscale Eyes New York IPO
Former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's stake in AI startup Nscale could yield tens of millions as the company prepares to trade on Wall Street.
Sir Nick Clegg, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and ex-leader of the Liberal Democrats, is reportedly in line for a substantial financial gain from Nscale, a British technology firm specializing in data centers and artificial intelligence. Clegg joined the company's board in March 2026, and Nscale has since announced its intention to file for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange.
Clegg, who previously held the role of Deputy Prime Minister alongside Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron from 2010 to 2015, later joined Facebook (now Meta Platforms) in 2018. He served as vice-president for global affairs and communications before becoming Meta's president for global affairs in 2022. He announced his departure from Meta in January 2025.
As a board member, Clegg reportedly holds 917,460 shares in Nscale, representing approximately 0.12% of the company's existing stock. Current valuations place Nscale at $14.6 billion (£10.9 billion), which would make Clegg's stake worth around $18 million (£13.5 million). However, reports suggest Nscale could seek a valuation of up to $35 billion (£26.2 billion), potentially increasing Clegg's stake to as much as $42 million (£31.5 million).
Nscale, co-founded in May 2024 by Josh Payne and Nathan Townsend, is focused on developing sovereign AI infrastructure. The company aims to have its first data center operational in Loughton, Essex, early in 2027. Despite choosing New York for its stock market flotation, Nscale emphasizes its commitment to remaining UK-based.
Payne stated in Nscale's IPO filing that the company sees a significant opportunity in "sovereign AI," as nations increasingly aim to control their own AI capabilities. He added that Nscale is positioned to meet this demand, particularly in Europe, where British domicile offers a trusted partnership.
Nscale has acknowledged Clegg's value to the company, citing his extensive experience in global public policy, international government affairs, and technology leadership, as well as his relationships with governmental and regulatory bodies worldwide.
Clegg has previously sold Meta shares valued at approximately £24 million between 2022 and 2024, according to recent filings. He joined Nscale's board alongside Sheryl Sandberg, a former Meta executive.
Clegg's political career includes his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister following the May 2010 general election. His political path also saw the Liberal Democrats reduced to eight seats in the 2015 general election.
