Nick Blakey Joins North Melbourne Amid Sydney Swans Scandal Fallout

Sydney Swans defender Nick Blakey has secured a reported $12 million, eight-year deal with North Melbourne, his father's former club, despite having five years remaining on his current contract. This move comes in the wake of a well-publicized incident at the Pullman East Melbourne hotel on August 17, which led to Blakey and four teammates being suspended for breaching club rules. The suspensions for Blakey, Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon, and Riley Bice significantly impacted the Swans' premiership aspirations.

The hotel incident is separate from alleged sexual assaults that reportedly occurred in one of the rooms after adult entertainers were brought in to celebrate a victory. Four of the five players involved are part of an ongoing police investigation, with Bice considered a witness. No charges have been laid in relation to the alleged assaults.

Fresh reports indicate that Blakey, part of the group dubbed the 'Pullman Five,' claims he had limited knowledge of the events that allegedly transpired in the hotel room. According to a report from the Herald Sun, Blakey returned to the hotel around 3:30 a.m. on August 17, approximately an hour after the other players, following a night out that had been approved by the Swans. He reportedly spent time at a gathering on the eighth floor before retiring for the night, allegedly unaware of the incident that later triggered the police investigation and not involved in arranging for adult entertainers.

Blakey was reportedly drinking and out late but had left the room before the alleged dispute occurred. The following morning, as he prepared to depart for the airport, the Swans' team manager instructed him to disembark from the bus and return to the hotel. Blakey was reportedly unaware of the reason for this instruction and was later surprised when the club announced his suspension along with his four teammates for the remainder of the season.

This incident and the club's handling of it are believed to have exacerbated an existing rift between Blakey and the Swans management. Rumors of the club considering trading him had previously surfaced, and Blakey was reportedly angered by being told not to attend the club's best-and-fairest awards night amid the scandal's fallout.

Blakey's transfer to North Melbourne was confirmed on October 13. The Kangaroos hold a significant family connection for Blakey, whose father, John, played 224 games and won two premierships with the club. The timing of the contract offer has drawn criticism due to the ongoing police investigation, although the AFL reportedly did not intervene to advise North Melbourne against the recruitment.

The Sydney Swans' statement confirming Blakey's departure focused on the draft picks secured in the deal, mentioning his 173 games for the club since his 2019 debut. Chris Keane, the Swans' head of list strategy and player personnel, highlighted the value of the top-10 draft pick obtained, stating it would aid the club in strengthening its playing list. Keane also thanked Blakey for his service and wished him well at his new club.
