NHS Issues Urgent Plea for Organ Donors Amidst Critically Low Volunteer Numbers

The National Health Service (NHS) in England has issued an unprecedented public alert due to critically low organ donor numbers, urging individuals to register their donation decisions and inform their families. This comes as over 8,700 people are currently awaiting life-saving transplants, with an average of nine patients dying each week while on the waiting list.

New figures reveal a 9% decrease in organ donors compared to the previous year, and the pool of eligible donors has shrunk by approximately 20% since the 2019-20 period. England has operated under an 'opt-out' organ donation system since May 2020, where adults are presumed willing to donate unless they have explicitly opted out. However, family consent remains a crucial part of the process, and a lack of clarity on the deceased's wishes can prevent transplants.

Between April 2021 and March 2026, more than 700 potential organ donations did not proceed because families were unable to confirm the deceased's intentions, resulting in over 2,100 missed transplant opportunities. The NHS reports that while families support donation in 90% of cases when they are aware of their loved one's decision, this figure drops to around 50% when discussions have not taken place.

Jodie Cantle, a 34-year-old from Devon, exemplifies the urgent need. She has been waiting for a lung transplant for over eight years due to cystic fibrosis. Despite receiving 21 potential donor matches, none have resulted in a transplant, with one instance of 'perfect' lungs being unavailable due to a lack of operating theatre capacity. Cantle emphasized the emotional toll of these near-misses and the critical importance of discussing donation wishes with family.

Anthony Clarkson, director of organ and tissue donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, described the current situation as one of the most challenging periods for organ donation in over a decade. He highlighted that hundreds of potential transplants are being lost due to families being unaware of their loved ones' wishes, urging the public to provide clarity to their families. "Most of us would accept an organ if we needed one, but opportunities to save lives are being lost because families didn't know what their loved ones wanted. Leave them certain," Clarkson stated.

The NHS is specifically appealing to one million individuals who have not yet recorded an organ donation decision to confirm their wishes. People can register their decision to donate or opt out through the NHS Organ Donor Register online, by phone at 0300 123 23, or via the NHS App.
