NHS Grampian has suspended all planned pediatric surgeries at Dr. Gray's Hospital in Elgin due to concerns regarding the quality and safety of care for children. The health board confirmed that emergency pediatric surgery had already been paused in June, with limited exceptions, after issues were identified within surgical services.

The suspension now extends to all elective procedures, encompassing dental and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) operations. This decision follows an unannounced inspection by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) in April, which subsequently raised concerns about the hospital's pediatric care.

Dr. Hugh Farrow-Bishop, NHS Grampian medical director, stated that the regulator had sought assurances concerning the number of staff at the hospital possessing advanced pediatric life support training. In response, the health board has reviewed staffing rotas and existing procedures, implementing changes to ensure appropriately trained staff are available on-site for emergencies. Training records have also undergone review, with refresher courses being arranged as needed.
