As Week 1 of the NFL season approaches, teams are finalizing rosters and addressing last-minute injury concerns. Several prominent players are facing uncertainty regarding their availability for their teams' season openers.
Rams and 49ers Injury Statuses
The Los Angeles Rams' newly unretired defensive tackle Aaron Donald remained noncommittal Monday about his participation in the team's Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. Donald, who rejoined the Rams on August 30, is working through a conditioning ramp-up, and his availability is being evaluated daily. Head coach Sean McVay had previously indicated the entire roster was expected to travel.
Meanwhile, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris confirmed that star defensive end Nick Bosa will play in Thursday's season opener. Bosa, who suffered a torn ACL last season and dealt with tendinitis in training camp, has returned to practice. His active status is a significant boost to the 49ers' pass rush.
Cowboys' Offensive Line Shuffle
The Dallas Cowboys will be without All-Pro guard Tyler Smith for at least the first four games of the regular season. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced Monday that Smith is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks following thumb surgery. Offensive lineman T.J. Bass is slated to take over as the starting left guard in Smith's absence. The Cowboys are set to open their season against the New York Giants.
Quarterback Decisions and Roster Moves
The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa as the starting quarterback for their Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Kevin Stefanski made the announcement official on Monday. Michael Penix Jr. is still recovering from knee surgery, and Cooper Rush is expected to serve as the backup.
In Cleveland, Browns head coach Todd Monken indicated that rookie quarterback Taylen Green could be active for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Green, a sixth-round pick, made the Browns' 53-man roster as QB3 after Dillon Gabriel was placed on injured reserve. Monken named Deshaun Watson the starter on August 24.
Other Notable Injury Updates
Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks is optimistic about playing in Sunday's opener against the Chicago Bears despite missing practice due to general soreness. Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is also expected to play in Sunday's opener against the Los Angeles Chargers as he recovers from a high ankle sprain.
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is expected to play in Thursday's game against the 49ers in Australia after being held out of August practices with a psoas injury.
Veteran Contract News
Safety Harrison Smith has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Minnesota Vikings, returning for his 15th NFL season. The New York Giants have also agreed to a two-year, $13 million extension with veteran backup quarterback Jameis Winston, keeping him under contract through 2028.
