NFL Suspends Two Officials for Unprofessional Conduct
Line judge Jeff Seeman receives a two-game ban, while referee Adrian Hill gets a one-game suspension following separate Week 4 incidents.
The National Football League has suspended two officials, line judge Jeff Seeman and referee Adrian Hill, for unprofessional conduct involving players during Week 4 games. The disciplinary actions were issued by NFL Vice President of Officiating Ramon George.
Seeman received a two-game suspension for an incident during the Arizona Cardinals' game against the New York Giants. Broadcast cameras captured Seeman directing profanity at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride late in the fourth quarter after McBride voiced frustration over an unflagged contact play. McBride appeared to acknowledge the broadcast camera filming the exchange.
NFL Players Association Executive Director JC Tretter commented on social media, stating, "This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."
Hill was suspended for one game following an interaction during the Miami Dolphins versus Minnesota Vikings matchup. During a live play, Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon blocked Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson into Hill, knocking the referee down. After standing up, Hill confronted Wilson. No flags were thrown on the play.
Following the game, Wilson downplayed the encounter, saying, "That was funny, honestly. I ended up apologizing to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn't want us fighting, me and [Gordon]. He said he was just trying to break us up."
Both officials will serve their suspensions without pay. The league typically handles such matters internally, but these suspensions mark a public acknowledgment of the disciplinary measures taken.
